Language Pattern (in English)

1. Talking about your routine and practice plan

You can describe your practice routine with a simple pattern:

Pattern:

  • Je vais + infinitive verb = I am going to + verb (future plan)
  • Je veux + infinitive verb = I want to + verb (goal or intention)

Examples using this module's verbs:

  • Je vais réviser la prononciation.
  • Translation: I am going to review pronunciation.
  • Je veux m'entraîner tous les jours.
  • Translation: I want to practice every day.
  • Je vais écouter du français et répéter à voix haute.
  • Translation: I am going to listen to French and repeat out loud.

Notice that réviser, s'entraîner, écouter, and répéter are all in the infinitive form (the basic dictionary form, usually ending in -er in French).

2. Reflexive verb: "s'entraîner"

s'entraîner literally means "to train oneself" and is a reflexive verb. When you use it with je (I), it becomes je m'entraîne.

  • Je m'entraîne à parler français.
  • Translation: I practice speaking French.

For your plan, you will often use the infinitive after another verb:

  • Je veux m'entraîner tous les jours.
  • Translation: I want to practice every day.

3. Time expressions for a routine

You already know some simple time expressions from earlier modules. Combine them with today's words:

  • tous les jours (too lay ZH-oor) = every day
  • le matin (luh mah-TAN) = in the morning
  • le soir (luh SWAR) = in the evening

Examples:

  • Je vais réviser la prononciation le matin.
  • Translation: I am going to review pronunciation in the morning.
  • Je m'entraîne tous les jours.
  • Translation: I practice every day.

Using these simple patterns, you can now describe a clear, realistic French practice routine.

Practice Dialogue (in English)

In this dialogue, two friends talk about reviewing French pronunciation and creating a small daily practice routine. Notice how they use the new vocabulary to describe their goals and habits.

Two friends are talking about how they will continue practicing French after their course.

Person A

Salut ! Tu vas continuer à pratiquer le français tous les jours ?

Hi! Are you going to continue practicing French every day?

Person B

Oui, mon objectif est de parler plus clairement.

Yes, my goal is to speak more clearly.

Person A

Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire exactement ?

What are you going to do exactly?

Person B

Je vais réviser les dialogues et m'entraîner à voix haute.

I am going to review the dialogues and practice out loud.

Person A

Bonne idée ! Moi, je vais écouter du français le matin, puis répéter les phrases.

Good idea! Me, I am going to listen to some French in the morning, then repeat the sentences.

Person B

Super. Comme ça, on s'entraîne un peu tous les jours.

Great. That way, we practice a little every day.

Person A

Oui, une petite routine, mais régulière.

Yes, a small routine, but regular.

Person B

On se parle en français la semaine prochaine pour réviser ?

Shall we talk in French next week to review?

Check Your Understanding (in English)

Answer this question to review the new vocabulary and the pattern for describing your practice routine.

Which French sentence best means: "I am going to listen to French and repeat out loud every day"?

  1. Je vais écouter du français et répéter à voix haute tous les jours.
  2. Je veux réviser le français le matin.
  3. Je m'entraîne à parler français ce soir.
  4. Mon objectif est de comprendre le français.
Show Answer

Answer: A) Je vais écouter du français et répéter à voix haute tous les jours.

Option 1 is correct because it includes all the key ideas: "Je vais" (I am going to), "écouter du français" (listen to French), "répéter à voix haute" (repeat out loud), and "tous les jours" (every day). The other options change the meaning: they talk about reviewing in the morning, practicing this evening, or having a goal to understand French, but not specifically about listening and repeating every day.
