Language Pattern (in English)
1. Spanish pronunciation: clear vowels and word stress
Spanish vowels are very consistent and short. Each letter usually has one sound:
- a like in "father" (e.g., Hola – OH-lah)
- e like in "met" (e.g., Perdón – pehr-DON)
- i like in "machine" (e.g., Gracias – GRAH-syahs)
- o like in "told" but shorter (e.g., Por favor – por fah-VOR)
- u like "oo" in "food" (e.g., Tú – too, from previous module)
Stress rule (where the voice is stronger):
- If a word ends in a vowel, n, or s, stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable:
- Hola – HO-la
- Gracias – GRA-cias
- Perdón is an exception because of the accent mark: per-DÓN
When you say phrases like Por favor or Otra vez, por favor, keep each vowel clear and short. Do not reduce vowels like in English.
---
2. French pronunciation: nasal vowels and final consonants
Two big French patterns:
- Many final consonants are silent.
- Bonjour – bohn-ZHOOR (the final r is soft, but you do not say a clear r like in English)
- Parlez-vous anglais ? – par-LAY voo ahn-GLAY (the final s in vous is silent here)
- Nasal vowels: when a vowel is followed by n or m, the sound goes through your nose. Do not fully pronounce the n/m.
- Bonjour – bohn-ZHOOR (the "on" is nasal: say "bohn" with air in your nose)
- Pardon – pahr-DOHN (again, nasal "on")
Practice by exaggerating the smooth flow: French phrases should sound connected:
- S’il vous plaît – seel-voo-PLEH (link between words, almost like one long word)
---
3. Mandarin basics: tones and pinyin
Mandarin uses tones, which change meaning even if the consonants and vowels are the same.
We will use these tone marks:
- 1st tone (¯): high and flat (e.g., 妈 mā – not in this module, but as a model)
- 2nd tone (´): rising, like you are asking a question
- 3rd tone (ˇ): low then rising
- 4th tone (`): sharp falling, like a strong "No!"
Look at some key words from this module (with pinyin and tone numbers):
- 你好 nǐ hǎo (nee-HAO) – 3rd tone + 3rd tone – your voice dips low on nǐ, then again on hǎo.
- 谢谢 xièxie (SHYEAH-shyeh) – 4th tone + neutral – first syllable falls sharply, second is light.
- 请 qǐng (cheeng) – 3rd tone – start mid, dip, then rise slightly.
- 对不起 duìbuqǐ (DWAY-boo-chee) – 4th tone, neutral, 3rd tone.
- 再说一遍 zài shuō yí biàn (dzai SHWOR ee-BYEN) – 4th, 1st, 2nd, 4th.
High-impact tip: even if your tones are not perfect, if you:
- keep syllables short and clear, and
- try to make rising tones really rise (2nd tone) and falling tones really fall (4th tone),
people will understand basic travel phrases.

4. Using slow, clear speech and confirmation phrases
In all three languages, you can control the rhythm to be more understandable:
- Spanish: Slightly separate words and keep a steady beat:
- ¿Pue-de ha-blar más des-pa-cio?
- French: Link words smoothly but speak a bit slower:
- Pou-vez-vous par-ler plus len-te-ment ?
- Mandarin: Keep each syllable separate and rhythmic:
- Qǐng shuō màn yì diǎn. – 请说慢一点。
Use confirmation phrases to check understanding:
- Spanish: "¿Está bien?" (ehs-TAH BYEN) – "Is that okay?"
- French: "C’est bon ?" (seh BOHN) – "Is that okay?"
- Mandarin: "可以吗?" kěyǐ ma? (kuh-YEE ma) – "Is that okay?"
Combining polite words (please, thank you, sorry) with slow, clear speech and these confirmation questions will make your communication much smoother when traveling.
Practice Dialogue (in English)
You are at a small café in a new country. You want to greet the staff, ask if they speak English, and politely ask them to repeat or speak slowly if needed. The dialogue shows parallel mini-conversations in Spanish, French, and Mandarin so you can notice rhythm, stress, and tones.
At a café counter, ordering and asking for clarification in Spanish, French, and Mandarin.
Hola, buenas tardes. ¿Habla inglés?
Hello, good afternoon. Do you speak English?
Hola. Sí, un poco. ¿En qué puedo ayudarle?
Hello. Yes, a little. How can I help you?
Gracias. Perdón, ¿puede hablar más despacio?
Thank you. Sorry, can you speak more slowly?
Claro. Repito: un café y un agua, ¿verdad?
Of course. I repeat: a coffee and a water, right?
Bonjour. Excusez-moi, parlez-vous anglais ?
Hello. Excuse me, do you speak English?
Bonjour. Oui, un petit peu. Que désirez-vous ?
Hello. Yes, a little bit. What would you like?
Merci. Pardon, pouvez-vous parler plus lentement ?
Thank you. Sorry, can you speak more slowly?
Bien sûr. Je répète encore une fois, s’il vous plaît : un café et un verre d’eau, c’est ça ?
Of course. I repeat one more time, please: a coffee and a glass of water, is that right?
你好。请问,你会说英语吗?
Hello. Excuse me, do you speak English?
你好。我会说一点点。你要点什么?
Hello. I can speak a little. What would you like to order?
谢谢。对不起,请说慢一点。再说一遍,请。
Thank you. Sorry, please speak a bit more slowly. Please say it again.
好的,我再说一遍:一杯咖啡和一杯水,对吗?
Okay, I will say it again: one cup of coffee and one cup of water, right?
Check Your Understanding (in English)
Test your understanding of key pronunciation-focused phrases from this module.
You did not understand what someone said and want them to repeat it slowly. Which set of phrases correctly expresses this idea in Spanish, French, and Mandarin?
- Spanish: Perdón, ¿puede hablar más despacio? / French: Pardon, pouvez-vous parler plus lentement ? / Mandarin: 对不起,请说慢一点。再说一遍,请。
- Spanish: Hola, ¿habla inglés? / French: Bonjour, parlez-vous anglais ? / Mandarin: 你好,你会说英语吗?
- Spanish: Gracias, por favor / French: Merci, s’il vous plaît / Mandarin: 谢谢,请。
- Spanish: No entiendo, adiós / French: Je ne comprends pas, au revoir / Mandarin: 我不懂,再见。
Show Answer
Answer: A) Spanish: Perdón, ¿puede hablar más despacio? / French: Pardon, pouvez-vous parler plus lentement ? / Mandarin: 对不起,请说慢一点。再说一遍,请。
Option 1 is correct because each phrase clearly asks the other person to speak more slowly and/or repeat: Spanish 'Perdón, ¿puede hablar más despacio?', French 'Pardon, pouvez-vous parler plus lentement ?', and Mandarin '对不起,请说慢一点。再说一遍,请。' all match the idea of 'Sorry, can you speak more slowly and say it again, please?'. The other options either ask about English, simply say thank you, or say you do not understand and goodbye without asking for repetition.
