Language Pattern: Talking About Change and Influence

In this module we connect Toki Pona to ideas about thought and change. Here are two useful patterns:

  1. Using “ante” to talk about change
  • ante means different or to change.
  • You can use it as a describing word or as a verb.

Examples:

  • jan ni li ante.

"This person is different."

  • toki pona li ante e pilin mi.

"Toki Pona changes my feelings."

Structure when "ante" is a verb:

  • X li ante e Y.

X changes Y.

More examples:

  • kulupu li ante e nimi.

"The community changes the words."

  • toki sina li ante e sona mi.

"Your language changes my understanding."

  1. Using “tan” and “la” to show influence or reason

You already know tan (because of, from) and la (context marker).

To say that one thing influences another, you can:

  • Use tan to show the cause:
  • mi pilin pona tan toki pona.

"I feel good because of Toki Pona."

  • Use X la Y to show context:
  • mi toki lon toki pona la pilin mi li ante.

"When I speak in Toki Pona, my feelings are different."

Here, the context mi toki lon toki pona (I speak in Toki Pona) sets the situation. In that situation, pilin mi li ante (my feelings are different).

  1. Talking about knowing and understanding with “sona”
  • sona means knowledge or to know / understand / be able to.
  • Pattern: mi sona e X. = "I know X."

Examples:

  • mi sona e ni: toki pona li lili.

"I know this: Toki Pona is small/simple."

  • kulupu li pali e nimi sin la mi sona ala.

"The community creates new words and I don’t know (them)."

You can also combine these ideas:

  • toki pona li ante e sona mi tan kulupu.

"Toki Pona changes my understanding because of the community."
