Language Pattern: Talking About Routine, Recent Past, and Near Future
1. Talking about routine
In Arabic, you can talk about your daily routine using the simple present tense.
- "I" forms often start with أَ (a-).
Examples:
- أَسْتَيْقِظ السّاعةَ السّابِعة كُلَّ يَوْم.
- as-tay-qiẓ as-sā-ʿa as-sā-biʿa kul-la yawm
- "I wake up at seven o'clock every day."
- أَذْهَب إِلى العَمَل في السّاعةِ التّاسِعة.
- aḏ-hab ilā al-ʿa-mal fi as-sā-ʿa at-tā-siʿa
- "I go to work at nine o'clock."
- أَدْرُس العَرَبِيّة بَعْدَ العَمَل.
- ad-ru-s al-ʿa-ra-biy-ya baʿ-da al-ʿa-mal
- "I study Arabic after work."
Useful time words for routine:
- كُلَّ يَوْم (kul-la yawm) – "every day"
- في المَساء (fi al-ma-sāʾ) – "in the evening"
---
2. Talking about the near future
Very often, Arabic uses the same present form with a future time word.
Common future markers:
- غَدًا (gha-dan) – "tomorrow"
- بَعْدَ قَليل (baʿ-da qa-lil) – "in a little while / soon"
- في نِهايةِ الأُسْبوع (fi ni-hā-ya-ti al-us-būʿ) – "on the weekend"
Examples:
- غَدًا أَذْهَب إِلى السّوق.
- gha-dan aḏ-hab ilā as-sūq
- "Tomorrow I am going to the market."
- في نِهايةِ الأُسْبوع أَرْتاح في البَيْت.
- fi ni-hā-ya-ti al-us-būʿ ar-tāḥ fi al-bayt
- "On the weekend I relax at home."
You can also link actions:
- أَوَّلًا ... ثُمَّ ... (aw-wa-lan ... thum-ma ...) – "first ... then ..."
- بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ (baʿ-da ḏā-li-ka) – "after that / then"
Example:
- أَوَّلًا أَسْتَيْقِظ، ثُمَّ أَشْرَبُ القَهْوَة، وَبَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ أَذْهَبُ إِلى العَمَل.
- aw-wa-lan as-tay-qiẓ, thum-ma ash-ra-bu al-qah-wa, wa-baʿ-da ḏā-li-ka aḏ-ha-bu ilā al-ʿa-mal
- "First I wake up, then I drink coffee, and after that I go to work."
---
3. Talking about recent past
To talk about yesterday or recent activities, you can use simple past forms. Notice the -تُ ending for "I" in many verbs.
Examples:
- أَمْسِ دَرَسْتُ العَرَبِيّة في البَيْت.
- ams da-rast-tu al-ʿa-ra-biy-ya fi al-bayt
- "Yesterday I studied Arabic at home."
- أَمْسِ ذَهَبْتُ إِلى السّينَما، ثُمَّ أَرْتَحْتُ في البَيْت.
- ams dha-hab-tu ilā as-sin-a-mā, thum-ma ar-taḥt-tu fi al-bayt
- "Yesterday I went to the cinema, then I rested at home."
Time marker:
- أَمْسِ (ams) – "yesterday"
By combining:
- present forms for routine,
- present + future time word for plans,
- past forms + أَمْسِ for recent activities,
you can tell simple stories about your day.
Practice Dialogue: Talking About Your Day and Tomorrow
Read this short conversation between two friends talking about their daily routine, yesterday, and plans for tomorrow.
Two friends are meeting at a café and talking about their typical day, what they did yesterday, and simple plans for tomorrow.
كَيْفَ يَوْمُكَ العادي؟ ماذا تَفْعَل كُلَّ يَوْم؟
How is your usual day? What do you do every day?
أَوَّلًا أَسْتَيْقِظ السّاعةَ السّابِعة، ثُمَّ أَشْرَبُ القَهْوَة، وَبَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ أَذْهَب إِلى العَمَل.
First I wake up at seven o'clock, then I drink coffee, and after that I go to work.
وَماذا تَفْعَل في المَساء؟
And what do you do in the evening?
في المَساء أَدْرُس العَرَبِيّة قَليلًا، ثُمَّ أَرْتاح في البَيْت.
In the evening I study Arabic a little, then I rest at home.
جَيِّد! ماذا فَعَلْتَ أَمْسِ؟
Good! What did you do yesterday?
أَمْسِ دَرَسْتُ العَرَبِيّة في الصّباح، ثُمَّ ذَهَبْتُ إِلى السّوق.
Yesterday I studied Arabic in the morning, then I went to the market.
وَغَدًا؟ ماذا سَتَفْعَل غَدًا؟
And tomorrow? What will you do tomorrow?
غَدًا أَذْهَب إِلى الجَامِعة في الصّباح، وَبَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ أَرْتاح في البَيْت في نِهايةِ الأُسْبوع.
Tomorrow I am going to the university in the morning, and after that I will relax at home on the weekend.

Show Answer
Answer: A) أَوَّلًا أَسْتَيْقِظ، ثُمَّ أَذْهَب إِلى العَمَل.
Option 1 uses the correct linking words and verbs: أَوَّلًا (first) + أَسْتَيْقِظ (I wake up), ثُمَّ (then) + أَذْهَب إِلى العَمَل (I go to work). The other options change the meaning or use time words incorrectly.
