1. Softening your tone with 小句子 (little phrases)

In Mandarin, short polite phrases before or after your main sentence make you sound much softer.

Common softeners:

• 不好意思 … (bù hǎo yì si – excuse me / sorry)
• Use before a request or when you might disturb someone.
• Example:
• 不好意思，可以再说一遍吗？
• bù hǎo yì si, kě yǐ zài shuō yí biàn ma?
• "Excuse me, could you say it again?"

• 麻烦你 … (má fan nǐ – could I trouble you to…)
• Very polite way to ask for help.
• Example:
• 麻烦你说慢一点。
• má fan nǐ shuō màn yì diǎn.

• kě yǐ zài shuō yí biàn ma?

• 再 (zài) = again; 说一遍 (shuō yí biàn) = say one more time.

• 可以说慢一点吗？
• kě yǐ shuō màn yì diǎn ma?
• "Could you speak a bit more slowly?"
• 慢一点 (màn yì diǎn) = a bit slower.

You can add softeners in front:

• 不好意思，可以说慢一点吗？
