Language Pattern (in English)

1. "할게요" – Saying what you will do for someone

The pattern 동사 + 할게요 (hal-kkye-yo) is a very common way to say what you will do, especially as a promise or decision in the moment.

  • It is polite (–요 level).
  • It often has the nuance of: "Okay, then I’ll do that for you" or "I’ll take that action."

Examples from this module:

  1. 문자할게요.

Korean: 문자할게요.

Phonetic: mun-ja hal-kkye-yo

Meaning: "I’ll text you."

  1. 나중에 다시 연락할게요.

Korean: 나중에 다시 연락할게요.

Phonetic: na-jung-e da-si yeon-rak hal-kkye-yo

Meaning: "I’ll contact you again later."

You can replace the verb:

  • 전화할게요. (jeon-hwa hal-kkye-yo) – "I’ll call you."
  • 카톡할게요. (ka-tok hal-kkye-yo) – "I’ll KakaoTalk you."

---

2. Asking if it’s okay: "괜찮아요?"

괜찮아요? (gwaen-cha-na-yo?) means "Is it okay? / Are you okay?"

To ask if a specific action is okay, you can add a noun or verb phrase before it.

From the vocabulary:

  • 지금 통화 괜찮아요?

Korean: 지금 통화 괜찮아요?

Phonetic: ji-geum tong-hwa gwaen-cha-na-yo?

Meaning: "Is it okay to talk on the phone now?" (literally: "Now phone-call okay?")

You can change the time word:

  • 나중에 통화 괜찮아요? (na-jung-e tong-hwa gwaen-cha-na-yo?) – "Is it okay to talk later?"

---

3. Chat tone: polite vs. casual and using ㅋㅋ / ㅎㅎ

In Korean messaging, tone is very important. You already know –요 endings are polite.

  • Polite chat: use –요 endings.

Example:

  • Korean: 오늘 몇 시에 만날까요?

Phonetic: o-neul myeot si-e man-nal-kka-yo?

Meaning: "What time shall we meet today?"

  • Casual chat: drop –요 and use banmal (informal).

Example:

  • Korean: 오늘 몇 시에 만날까?

Phonetic: o-neul myeot si-e man-nal-kka?

Meaning: "What time should we meet today?" (informal)

In chats, Koreans often add ㅋㅋ (keu-keu) or ㅎㅎ (ha-ha) to soften the tone or show light laughter.

  • ㅋㅋ feels a bit stronger, like "lol".
  • ㅎㅎ feels softer, like a gentle "haha" or a smile.

Examples:

  • Korean: 오늘 진짜 덥죠 ㅋㅋ

Phonetic: o-neul jin-jja deop-jyo keu-keu

Meaning: "It’s really hot today lol."

  • Korean: 죄송해요 ㅎㅎ 지금 가는 중이에요.

Phonetic: joe-song-hae-yo ha-ha ji-geum ga-neun jung-i-e-yo

Meaning: "Sorry haha, I’m on my way now."

Notice that even with ㅋㅋ / ㅎㅎ, the sentences still use –요 for politeness. This is common when texting people you are not very close to, or older people.

Practice Dialogue (in English)

In this conversation, two friends are texting to set up and adjust their meeting plans. Notice how they start politely, check if calling is okay, and then confirm the time and place.

Two friends texting to make and adjust weekend plans

A

주말에 시간 있어요? 카톡해요.

B

네, 있어요. 지금 통화 괜찮아요?

Yes, I do. Is it okay to talk on the phone now?

A

지금은 조금 바빠요. 나중에 다시 연락할게요.

I’m a little busy right now. I’ll contact you again later.

B

알겠어요. 약속 시간이랑 약속 장소 정해지면 문자할게요.

Got it. When the meeting time and place are decided, I’ll text you.

A

일요일 세 시 홍대역 앞 어때요?

How about Sunday at 3 in front of Hongdae Station?

B

좋아요, 시간/장소 괜찮아요 ㅎㅎ

Sounds good, the time and place are okay haha.

Okay, come safely lol.

Check Your Understanding (in English)

Answer this question about using Korean texting expressions to confirm plans politely.

You want to politely say in a text: "I’ll text you when the time is decided." Which Korean sentence is the most natural?

  1. 시간 정해지면 문자할게요.
  2. 시간 정해지면 문자해.
  3. 시간 정해지면 카톡 ㅋㅋ
  4. 시간 정해지면 괜찮아요?
Show Answer

Answer: A) 시간 정해지면 문자할게요.

Option 1, "시간 정해지면 문자할게요.", uses the promise/decision form "할게요" with a polite –요 ending, which matches the meaning "I’ll text you" in a polite, natural way. Option 2 is casual (no –요), option 3 is incomplete and too casual, and option 4 means "Is it okay if the time is decided?" which is a different meaning.
