Language Pattern (in English)
1. Inviting with soft, polite questions
A very common pattern to invite someone politely in Hindi is:
Structure:
— kyaa aap … aa-eṅ-ge? — "Will you come …?"
You add a time or place in the middle:
kyaa aap kal mere ghar aa-eṅ-ge?
"Will you come to my house tomorrow?"
You can change the time word:
- आज शाम — aaj shaam — this evening
- कल सुबह — kal subah — tomorrow morning
Example:
kyaa aap aaj shaam mere ghar aa-eṅ-ge?
"Will you come to my house this evening?"
---
2. Accepting and declining invitations politely
To accept politely, you can say:
mujhe ach-cha la-ge-ga.
"I would like that / That would be nice."
You can combine with the invitation:
haan, mujhe ach-cha la-ge-ga.
"Yes, I would like that."
To decline politely, soften your "no" with "माफ़ कीजिए" (maaf kee-ji-ye — "sorry" / "forgive me"):
(male)
maaf kee-ji-ye, main nahin aa paa-ooṅ-gaa.
"Sorry, I won’t be able to come."
(female)
maaf kee-ji-ye, main nahin aa paa-ooṅ-gee.
"Sorry, I won’t be able to come."
Note on gender:
- पाऊँगा (paa-ooṅ-gaa) is used by men.
- पाऊँगी (paa-ooṅ-gee) is used by women.
---
3. Asking about location and arrival (phone / chat)
Two very useful questions on the phone or in messages:
aap kahaan hain?
"Where are you?"
aap kab tak pahuṅch-eṅ-ge?
"By when will you arrive?" / "What time will you get here?"
You can add a place for clarity:
aap party mein kab tak pahuṅch-eṅ-ge?
"By when will you arrive at the party?"
---
4. Talking about likes and preferences
You already know "मुझे … पसंद है" (mujhe … pasand hai) — "I like …".
To compare preferences, you can use "पर" (par — "but") and "ज़्यादा" (zyaa-daa — "more"):
mujhe coffee pasand hai, par chaay zyaa-daa pasand hai.
"I like coffee, but I like tea more."
Pattern:
mujhe X pasand hai, par Y zyaa-daa pasand hai.
"I like X, but I like Y more."
This is very useful when making social plans, for example choosing drinks, food, or activities.
Practice Dialogue (in English)
Two friends are chatting by message and then meeting at home. They invite, accept/decline, ask about location and arrival, and talk about preferences.
Two friends planning a visit and chatting on the phone / messages
Hi Neha, let’s meet.
Yes, I would like that.
Will you come to my house this evening?
Sorry, I won’t be able to come today. Can tomorrow work?
Okay, please come tomorrow evening at six o’clock.
Okay, I like coffee, but I like tea more.
No problem, I will make tea. When you leave, message me.
(On the phone) Rohan, I’ve set off. Where are you?
I am at home. By when will you arrive?
I will arrive in ten minutes.
Check Your Understanding (in English)
Choose the best Hindi sentence for this situation: You want to politely say, “Sorry, I won’t be able to come tomorrow.”
Which option best means “Sorry, I won’t be able to come tomorrow”?
Show Answer
Option 1 uses "माफ़ कीजिए" (sorry) and "मैं कल नहीं आ पाऊँगा / पाऊँगी" (I won’t be able to come tomorrow). The other options mean “Yes, I would like that,” “By when will you arrive?”, and “Let’s meet,” so they do not match the English sentence.
