Creating Space, Echo, and Movement

A dry sound exists close to the listener; a processed sound can occupy a room, repeat across time, or swirl around the stereo field. Reverb, delay, chorus, flanging, and phasing turn time itself into a mixing tool.

1. Hear the Difference: Dry, Space, Echo, Movement

Dry means close

A dry sound has no time-based processing. It often feels direct and close to the listener, like a voice spoken close to a microphone.

Three time-based jobs

  • Reverb suggests a room or space.
  • Delay produces repeats.
  • Modulation produces movement, width, or a swirling character.

A fast listening test

Ask: Do I hear a room, an echo, or movement? The answer helps identify whether you are hearing reverb, delay, or modulation.

2. Reverb: Building an Acoustic Space

Reflections become reverb

Reverb is a dense field of sound reflections. It can make a recorded source feel like it exists in a small booth, a hall, a plate, or an invented digital space.

Pre-delay protects clarity

Pre-delay is the gap before reverb begins. A longer gap lets a vocal or snare remain clear and forward before the reverb tail fills in behind it.

Decay defines size

Decay time is how long the reverb tail lasts. Short decay supports tight rhythms; longer decay creates a larger, more atmospheric impression.

Picture a snare in a room

The snare crack is dry sound. The first wall bounces are early reflections. The fading wash after those reflections is the reverb tail.

3. Practical Reverb Recipe: Lead Vocal

Use an aux return

Place reverb on a stereo aux return and set it to 100% wet. Send the vocal to it. This separates the dry vocal from its space and allows shared ambience.

Starting settings

For a lead vocal, try `1.2-1.8 s` decay and `40-80 ms` pre-delay. The pre-delay helps the lyric remain intelligible before the reverb blooms.

Raise the send until you hear the space, then reduce it slightly. Evaluate reverb with the full arrangement playing, not only with the vocal soloed.

4. Delay: Repetition You Can Shape

Delay creates repeats

A delay plays a copy of the sound after a chosen time. If repeats are distinct, the listener hears an echo rather than a continuous room-like wash.

Delay time

Set delay time in milliseconds or as a note value. A `1/4-note` delay repeats once per beat; a `1/8-note` delay repeats twice per beat.

Feedback and filtering

Feedback controls repeat count. Filtering each repeat prevents competition with the dry sound and can make echoes feel distant, warm, or telephone-like.

Stereo choices matter

A mono delay gives a stable central echo. Ping-pong delay alternates left and right, creating obvious stereo travel. Use movement only when it serves the arrangement.

5. Listening Decision: Which Effect Solves It?

Choose the effect before touching controls

For each mixing goal, select the best first tool. Then explain your choice aloud or in a notebook.

  1. A singer sounds like they are recorded inside your headphones, but you want them to feel two steps farther back without obvious repeats.
  • Start with: reverb
  1. The last word of each vocal phrase should repeat rhythmically into the next bar.

The LFO creates motion

Modulation effects use an LFO to change a parameter repeatedly over time. Rate controls speed; depth controls how far the parameter moves.

Chorus: thick and wide

Chorus uses subtly changing delayed copies. It can make guitars, vocals, and synthesizers feel wider, thicker, and gently doubled.

Flanging uses a very short changing delay, often with feedback. It creates a strong, metallic comb-filter sweep or

Phasing moves frequency cancellations through the sound. It is often smoother than flanging and works well on electric piano, pads, and rhythmic guitars.

7. Tempo Synchronization: Make Repeats and Motion Groove

Calculate a quarter note

Quarter-note duration in milliseconds is `60,000 / BPM`. At `120 BPM`, `60,000 / 120 = 500 ms`, so a quarter-note delay is `500 ms`.

Choose a musical division

Use `1/4` for spacious echoes, `1/8` for active support, `1/8 dotted` for syncopation, and `1/16` for fast texture. Lower feedback as repeats become faster.

Sync is a choice

Synchronize modulation rate for clearly rhythmic motion. Leave a slow chorus unsynchronized when you want a less mechanical, more natural sense of width.

8. Shared Space with Auxiliary Sends

What a send does

An auxiliary send copies part of a track to an effect return. The channel stays dry, while the return carries the wet reverb, delay, or modulation.

Create two shared returns

Make a `Short Room` return and a `Tempo Delay` return. Set both effects to 100% wet so their return faders control only processed sound.

Share space, vary depth

Send snare, guitars, and backing vocals to the same short room. Use less send for closer sources and more send for sources that should feel farther back.

Automate emphasis

Automate a delay send on the final word of a phrase or a guitar fill. This creates drama without covering the entire performance in constant echoes.
